Each December, communities across the nation observe National Impaired Driving Prevention
Month—a dedicated time to raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving and to encourage safe,
responsible choices during the holiday season and throughout the year.
Impaired driving, whether caused by alcohol, drugs (including prescription or over-the-counter
medications), or fatigue, remains a major public health and safety concern. With more celebrations
taking place during the holidays, it’s especially important to plan ahead and help keep our roads safe.
Why This Matters
- Impaired driving is one of the leading causes of preventable injuries and deaths on U.S. roadways.
- Alcohol, cannabis, and other drugs can slow reaction time, reduce coordination, and impair judgment.
- Even small amounts of alcohol or certain medications can affect one’s ability to drive.
- Prevention saves lives, not just for drivers, but also for passengers, pedestrians, and the entire community.
How to Prevent Impaired Driving
Plan Ahead
- Designate a sober driver before heading out.
- Use ride-share services, public transportation, or call a trusted friend or family member.
Know Your Medications
- Some prescription and over-the-counter drugs can impair driving
- Read warning labels and consult a healthcare provider or pharmacist if unsure.
Avoid Driving When Tired
- Fatigue can mimic impairment and greatly reduce reaction times.
Host Responsibly
- Offer non-alcoholic beverage options
- Help arrange safe transportation for guests
- Never allow someone to drive while impaired.
A Community Commitment
Everyone has a role to play in preventing impaired driving. By making responsible choices and
supporting others in doing the same, we can reduce injuries, save lives, and create safer roads for all. Together, we can protect our community and ensure a safer holiday season.
