Gun Violence

Jump to:

Gun violence is a public health issue that affects individuals, families, and entire communities. Whether it involves homicides, suicides, unintentional injuries, or community violence, the impact is long-lasting and far-reaching.

At the Talbot County Health Department, we are committed to sharing tools, information, and support services that promote safety, healing, and prevention.

Understanding Gun Violence as a Public Health Issue

Gun violence doesn’t have a single cause—and it doesn’t have a single solution. A public health approach looks at the root causes and risk factors, such as poverty, trauma, substance use, and lack of access to mental health care.

Our work focuses on:

  • Preventing violence before it happens
  • Supporting those affected by gun violence
  • Connecting people to mental health and crisis services
  • Partnering with schools, community organizations, and law enforcement

Safe Gun Storage Saves Lives

Storing firearms securely is one of the most effective ways to reduce gun injuries and deaths—especially in homes with children, teens, or someone experiencing a mental health crisis.

Tips for safe storage:

  • Use a gun safe, lock box, or trigger lock
  • Store ammunition separately from firearms
  • Never leave loaded guns unsecured in the home or car
